Where Every Dog Has Its Day

7 things dogs get up to when they are home alone (and what to do about it)

“Dad, what does Spot do when he is left alone? And why is the house always a mess?” This was the question that came out of my sons mouth about a year ago when we got our new Dalmatian.

It was a fair enough question, the house was always a lot less tidy after leaving him for a couple of hours. I chatted to a few of my fellow dog owners over the next week and there seemed to be a few things that our canine pets loved to get up to, the moment that front door shut behind us.

1. Separation Anxiety

This seemed to be the main thing, dogs are social creatures and don’t like to be left in an empty house. Much the same as a young child, I guess, they get anxious, angry and lonely.

2. Destroying everything within reach

Somehow every time, no matter how well things were put away and hidden there always seemed to be something shredded up or smashed.

3. Forgetting they were ever potty trained

I promise my dog doesn't need a nappy! And yet it seems every time he’s left alone he forgets not to urinate on the carpet. And every time, I spend almost an hour scrubbing different spots on the white carpet. Sometimes I seriously consider just covering the house in newspaper… although I’m sure he’d still find the one bare spot.

4. Making lots more noise than usual (according to the neighbours)

Not much needs to be said. Except I truly am sorry, and please don’t say you’re going to put him down next time he goes off like that. I promise he is as quiet as a mouse when I’m around.

5. Find any and all sweet treats (usually the freshly baked ones)

Yep. The apple pie. The oatmeal cookies. And dinner, every single time…

6. Make shoes disappear

It’s a magic talent that dogs seem to have. Sadly they can’t make them reappear.

7. Sulk when you get home because they know it’ll happen again

No matter how much I pat him and say I’m sorry, those puppy dog eyes just won’t forgive me.

So after telling my son this, he turns to me and says "are you going to leave me alone?" "Of course not- that why we have the day care centre." Then it struck me.... Why not find a day care centre for Spot too…. Now that was 12 months ago. Since then, no issues. No messy house, no grumpy neighbours, and most importantly we have a very, very happy dog!
