Associate Professor Melissa Petrakis, Group Director, Social Work Innovation, Transformation and Collaboration in Health (SWITCH) Research Group

Associate Professor Melissa Petrakis is Group Director of Social Work Innovation, Transformation and Collaboration in Health (SWITCH) Research Group, Department of Social Work, Monash University. She has worked in mental health for over 25 years, as a clinician then practice-based researcher. She has authored over 80 publications; delivered over 100 national/international conference presentations. In 2016 she was awarded The Tom Trauer Evaluation and Research Award, Australian and New Zealand TheMHS Awards, acknowledging excellence in her approach to research, championing co-design, co-production and co-authorship, with clinicians, people with lived experience of mental illness and families.

WORKSHOP: GETTING STARTED IN RESEARCH

Come and join a fun and interactive session with Dr Annie Venveille and Dr Karen Willis who will explore how to shift an idea or a clinical problem into a possible research project.

Professor Karen Willis

Karen Willis, Professor, Public Health at Victoria University, is a qualitative methodologist and health sociologist. Her research focuses on the health system, and she has a particular interest in how people with chronic conditions navigate healthcare. Current research (Future-Proofing the Frontline) examines strategies to support the mental health of frontline healthcare workers during times of crisis.

Associate Professor Annie Venville

Annie Venville, Associate Professor, Head of Social Work at Victoria University is a qualitative researcher. She has a great deal of experience developing applied research projects with community groups and industry partners. Her most recent work with colleagues at Western Health focused on enhancing access to income support for vulnerable hospital patients.

WORKSHOP: WRITING AND PUBLISHING YOUR RESEARCH PROJECT FINDINGS

In this interactive workshop, Dr Hickey will cover approaches to the writing and publication of health social work research. Using examples from the health social work practice-based research the workshop will focus on empirical research reports and will discuss the process of choosing what to write, how to write it clearly and how to navigate the process of submission and publication.

Dr Lyndal Hickey

Dr Lyndal Hickey is Lecturer in the Department of Social Work at the University of Melbourne. Lyndal has extensive experience as a social work practitioner in health settings. Her research interests focus on improving health and wellbeing outcomes for individuals with disabilities and their families across the lifespan. Lyndal is Associate Editor of Child: Care, Health and Development, an international, peer-reviewed journal.
