poking wire

here’s what to do if there’s a wire poking out from your braces and causing you discomfort.

issues addressed:

the video is definitely the best way to see how to solve the problem, but we’ve also listed out the steps below if that’s more convenient for you!

why does this happen?

sometimes brushing and eating can cause wires in your braces to come loose and stick out. this may happen with steel ties or archwires.

small wire

braces use two kinds of ties – rubber and steel. when steel tie wires come loose, it can cause irritation.

1.    a poking steel tie wire can be pushed down easily with the eraser end of a pencil.
2.    if that doesn’t work, place orthodontic wax on top of the poking wire.

large wire

sometimes wires can slip out of the tube on the back band. here’s a way this can be resolved from home...

1.    using clean tweezers, grab the wire and re-insert it back into the tube on the back band.
2.    if you can’t slide it into the tube, tuck it under to avoid discomfort.
3.    if anything is still causing irritation, place wax on top.
